Women's History Month and Eid al-Fitr Book Lists
There’s so much to celebrate this March. Let’s start with Women’s History Month book recommendations. These books represent some of the most iconic women in our history. I ensured this list emphasizes intersectionality (thank you, Dr. Kimberlé Crenshaw) and community engagement.
The full book list can be found here.
My non-negotiables on this list are
The ABC’s of Women’s History - Rio Cortez and Lauren Semmer are my favorite author/illustrator collaboration. This book emphasizes “Artists, Activists and Allies, about Civil Rights and Choice, about Freedom Fighters, Headliners, Labor -- and Librarians!” A must-read!
Planting Stories - Details the life and legacy of Pura Belpré, New York City’s first Puerto Rican librarian, who championed bilingual literature.
Be the Light: How She Became Angela Davis – A Powerful Picture Book Biography of a Civil Rights Icon for Kids - It’s virtually impossible to find picture books about Angela Davis, so I think everyone should read and have a copy of this gem!
I hope their legacies inspire your babies to continue to fight for our rights and to live in solidarity.
It’s projected that this Friday, March 20th, will be Eid al-Fitr, marking the end of another beautiful Ramadan (IA). Here are a few of my favorite new-release picture books that celebrate Eid stories. I hope you’ll consider them for storytime this week!
A Golden Eid: Festivals of the World by Hiba Noor Khan (Author), Singgih Cahyo Jadmiko (Illustrator). This beautiful picture book encompasses what Ramadan and Eid celebrations are all about - family, food, community, and giving back. Told from a child’s perspective as they learn about collectivism and the beauty in giving rather than receiving.
Together on Eid by Sana Rafi (Author), Mariam Quraishi (Illustrator). A beautiful representation of what it means to celebrate Eid. There’s an emphasis on intergenerational families and honoring family history, which makes this one really special.
Ibraheem’s Perfect Eid by Farhana Islam (Author), Nabila Adani (Illustrator). Teaches littles that there’s more to Eid than presents. It emphasizes the beauty in going to the mosque, giving back to the community, and spending time with family and friends.
More Eid picture books can be found here.
Happy Reading!
