May Reflections
A little bit of everything - mom-ing, wife-ing, professor-ing, and me
May is my favorite month. The semester is ending, so there’s excitement on campus for graduation festivities. We also celebrate Mother’s Day, Ari’s birthday, and our wedding anniversary. We basically spend the month in a deep appreciation of life and love.
Mom-ing
Mother’s Day was beautiful. My girl and I rocked matching shirts and had a great day. As a “one and complete” mom, I’m aware that these moments will soon pass as she gets older, and the “toddler” stage becomes a memory. That is why I make it my duty to go all out and enjoy every moment. My husband gifted me Tricia Hersey’s Rest Deck. I’ve bought this deck for so many of my good friends, but never myself. It was the perfect gift.

Ari’s Birthday was great! Book Swap was a success (more on this in a separate post). As a millennial mom, I know the joy that can come from the good old outdoors and some cupcakes. We kept it simple and small. We met up with cousins at the park and had a blast.

Wife-ing
It was our 7th wedding anniversary! We celebrated with Chuck’s Wings (Princeton folks, you know what I’m talking about) and a play at McCarter Theatre. We saw Eboni Booth’s Primary Trust and were just blown away.

Professor-ing
The end of the Spring semester is always my favorite time of year. There’s the excitement of graduation, award ceremonies, and a much-anticipated summer break. I welcomed my 5th cohort of undergraduates to my mentorship program that focuses on increasing the diversity amongst mental health professionals. A really great group of scholars who I know will make strides in our profession. One particular highlight of the semester was my teaching evaluations (I know - no one ever says that 😂). My students praised my ability to push them to think critically about social justice issues. HA take that ChatGPT!

Me
Mama is home for the summer, so this is my favorite time to catch up on all the things that I love. My TBR list is long! My book club read Happy Land this month and we had a chance to zoom with the author, Dolen Perkins-Valdez. Historical Fiction isn’t usually my first choice, but I REALLY enjoyed this book and highly recommend it. I planted a pollinator garden in our backyard, and fingers crossed, we get some action in the upcoming weeks. Also, as the family travel agent, I’m in full planning mode for our summer adventures - I have Cape May, Hershey Park, Baltimore Aquarium, and Chincoteague Island on my radar.

I’m excited to be in partnership with Brainquest again this summer, so keep an eye out for resources on how to level up your kiddo’s learning in the next few weeks. June’s “Raising Bookworms” book club pick will go live this week, and it will focus on Juneteenth. I’m excited to be working with the amazing Amber, founder of Mackenzie Madison of Philly, for a Juneteenth collab - fashion and books, does it get any better?
What’s on your summer reading list? What fun adventures do you have planned?
Happy Summer!
